Zurliene Story
Blake Zurliene had all the answers Sunday night against Murphysboro, tossing a one-hitter in Trenton Post 778's 4-1 victory in the "Gator Classic" championship. Post 778 won their own tournament for the second year in a row, again honoring the memory of legion baseball pioneer Ralph "Gator" Goodwin while Goodwin's sons watched from behind the backstop. Jerry and Larry Goodwin were special guests of the program all weekend. Post 778 adopted the nickname "Gator" in honor of Ralph Goodwin shortly after his death. "Our pitching was great all weekend, and we kept our mistakes to a minimum," said Post 778 manager Jason Satterfield. "We've got some tough games coming up, but 17-4 is pretty good. I'm really proud of our team." Post 778 has now won 13 consecutive games. Zurliene fanned eight in the victory. Murphysboro's only run was unearned, coming in the fourth on two Trenton errors and the visitors' only base hit. Trenton got on the board in the first inning, when Ryan Spicer walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Jared Fuhler's two-out single. In the third, Jim Ritzheimer singled and advanced to third on a wild throw, bringing up Fuhler, who lofted a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Jameson Rakers scored Post 778's third run, singling in the fourth inning and advancing to third on a sacrifice and a stolen base before Justin Dunning's rbi single. Trenton added an insurance tally in the sixth when Spicer executed a squeeze bunt to score Rakers, who had reached after being hit by a pitch and advanced on a wild pitch and a passed ball. ![]() |

Lockowitz Story
Morgan Lockowitz became the third Wesclin senior athlete to take home a "best of" honor from the Centralia Morning Sentinel, when she was named last week the girls Soccer Player of the Year for the daily newspapers' coverage area. Lockowitz joins classmates Sheldon Ritzheimer and Justin Dunning in being honored for their superlative prep campaigns this past spring. Ritzheimer was named the Sentinel's softball player of the year, and Dunning its baseball player of the year. Lockowitz knocked in 30 goals to go with six assists this season in leading the Warriors to a 17-5 record, the best single-season mark in the history of Wesclin soccer--girls or boys. Her most remarkable goal came against Mater Dei, when she scored from 50 yards out just seven seconds into the game. The play set a record for the fastest goal scored in Illinois high school girls soccer history. For her career, Lockowitz netted 93 goals and assisted on 41 goals. She will be a scholarship player at the University of Missouri-Rolla this coming fall, after committing early to the school in order to relax and focus on her senior season. Lockowitz was a standout in the classroom as well, sharing valedictory honors and completing her prep academic career with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She will major in engineering at Rolla. Lockowitz has been playing club soccer for the past 11 years with Metro United. She plans to play this summer in the Busch Premier League in St. Louis. Lockowitz is the daughter of Mark and Barb Lockowitz of Trenton. Her father was her high school coach. Both father and daughter gave praise to her Wesclin teammates. "Morgan's a very good ball striker and an excellent finisher, but without her teammates she wouldn't have been in position to score that many goals," Mark Lockowitz said. "I'm proud of all our kids. We only had 12 or 13 players dress varsity so everyone had to contribute." "My teammates were pretty amazing," said Morgan Lockowitz. "We did really well this year and had a lot of fun." ![]() |
