    Gator falls to Salem

Trenton took just its second district loss of the season Sunday night, in a make-up game at Salem.

Salem's Daniel Winchester fired a six-hitter and didn't allow an earned run in dealing the Gator a 6-1 defeat. Jameson Rakers took the loss for Trenton. Salem's key inning was the second, when they plated four runs.

Paul Ritzheimer, Ryan Spicer, Justin Dunning, Blake Zurliene, Tyler Shaw, and Rakers had Trenton's hits.

Trenton hosted Mt. Vernon for "Senior Night" on Tuesday, inducting Brent Brede, Fred Dintelman, and Bill Dunning into its Hall of Fame in a pregame ceremony.

The Gator close out their regular season tonight (Wednesday) in a makeup game at New Baden, with the district title potentially riding on the outcome.

    Swim Team Story

The Trenton Torpedo Swim/Dive Team finished their dual meet season at Greenville this past Wednesday, July 11th. While the Greenville dive squad gave the Clippers an initial lead after diving, the Torpedo swimmers came back strong and were leading in the team point total after the individual freestyle events. The butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke races turned the tide, and after the final freestyle race the Torpedoes had a 60 point win over the Greenville Clippers.

The Torpedoes finished their dual meet season with an excellent showing of 4 wins and 2 losses. The Torpedoes now prepare for the conference meet, to be held in Columbia, this week. The diving finals are Wednesday, July 18th, and swimming preliminary races on Thursday the 19th, with swimming finals to be held Saturday morning, July 21st, at the Columbia swimming pool. Gators Host Tourney

Trenton Post 778 will be the host July 21-26 for the 23rd district West tournament, with six teams fighting for the opportunity to represent the district at the 5th division tournament at Harrisburg.

Trenton's and New Baden's teams will both compete in the tournament, along with Aviston, Centralia, Mt. Vernon, and Salem.

It should be a competitive field. On Tuesday, Trenton and New Baden were tied atop the district standings, each with records of 8-2 in district. Both teams had two games remaining. The top two seeds in the tournament receive an opening round bye.

Trenton was scheduled to host Mt. Vernon Tuesday night, while New Baden traveled to Salem. Trenton and New Baden will make up an earlier rainout tonight (Wednesday) at New Baden. Centralia knocked off New Baden last week, and Salem took care of Trenton Sunday night, ending a 14-game winning streak by the Gator.

The action starts on Saturday, July 21 at 10 a.m. A total of four games in the double elimination tournament will be played on Saturday, with additional starts at 1, 4, and 7 p.m.

    Sunday's slate starts at 1 p.m., followed by games at 4 and 7 p.m.

There will be elimination games on Monday and Tuesday nights, each starting at 7 p.m., and the championship will be Wednesday, July 25 at 7 p.m. If a second championship game is necessary, it will be played Thursday at 7 p.m.

Junior Legion Update: Trenton Post 778's junior American Legion baseball team is still alive in the 23rd district junior tournament being competed at Effingham. Trenton beat South Central Sunday 10-3 to advance to a 6 p.m. game Tuesday night against Breese Red. The winner will go to the semifinal game tonight at 8 p.m. The loser drops to the bottom bracket of the tournament and lives to fight another day. The tournament championship dates are July 20 and July 21. The top three teams in the tournament advance to Fifth Division play at Highland starting July 31. The junior squad has been on something of a tear, winning nine of their last 11 games to move to 19-12 on the season. On Sunday, Dustin Pendergraft picked up the pitching win and also collected two hits and an rbi. Andrew Buehler delivered the main offensive blow with a bases-clearing double that gave Trenton an 8-0 lead in the fourth. Timmy Paulk had two hits, Kevin Kunz drove in two runs, and Matt Sellers made a sterling defensive play to cut

down a runner at the plate from his right field position.

District title in balance at New Baden Tonight

Trenton Post 778 and New Baden Post 321 American Legion baseball teams will square off tonight at 7 p.m. in New Baden, and the top seed in this weekend's 23rd district tournament at Trenton may hang in the balance.

As of Tuesday, both teams were 8-2, with games that night.

New Baden has had an excellent season and is tournament-tested, having competed in four already this season. Their two district losses are to Trenton and Centralia. Post 321 is led by its pitching, including the trio of Rich Derbak, Tyler Kehrer, and Steven Siegel. New Baden just returned from a tournament in Kentucky.

Trenton had a 14-game winning streak end Sunday with a loss to Salem. Post 778 won their own Gator Classic tournament earlier this summer, and also captured the crown in the Clinton County Classic. The Gator have lost to Centralia and Salem. A deep pitching staff led by Jameson Rakers and Blake Zurliene complements a dangerous lineup that pressures its opponents.
