Wesclin's football Warriors overwhelmed Sesser-Valier Friday night, picking up their first win of the season in what head coach Brandon Murphy described as the most complete game his squad has played this year.

Wesclin took a 22-0 first quarter lead and finished off a 41-20 victory on the road.

Letwon Williams ran roughshod over Sesser-Valier, scoring four touchdowns on 189 yards and passing for another score.

Murphy said getting the ball into Williams' hands more often was a focus during preparation for the game. Murphy also praised the line's play in opening up holes for Williams.

Williams made his presence felt on Wesclin's first possession, when he tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Paul Ritzheimer.

Ritzheimer returned Sesser's subsequent punt 21 yards and Williams sprinted to paydirt from 31 yards out to give Wesclin a 15-0 lead. Williams added a 33-yard touchdown burst before the first quarter ended.

Both teams scored twice in the second quarter, with Ritzheimer and Williams doing the honors from five and four yards out respectively.

Williams scored Wesclin's final touchdown on a one-yard plunge late in the third quarter.

The Warriors pelted visiting Altamont with 34 shots on goal in an easy win in New Baden. Golf Warriors post best round of season

Wesclin's golf team continued on a steady improvement arc this past week, posting a season-low team score in placing second in a triangular match with Waterloo-Gibault and Metro East Lutheran. Gibault won the affair with a total of 152, while Wesclin's top four totaled 174.

Brian Phagan and Kyle Zimmermann fired matching 40's over the nine-hole round, Shawn Arentsen shot 45, and Ross Turner and Andrew Martiszus each posted 49's.

"I'm beginning to see more consistent scores from many of our guys," said Wesclin coach Jason Schleifer. "I think we're doing a better job of avoiding those big numbers that ruin a round. They're beginning to realize a bogey is okay. I would like to think we're playing smarter golf and making better decisions."

While Phagan and Zimmermann are both capable of posting par or near-par rounds, Schleifer said other players have been more consistent of late. "Shawn Arentsen has been consistently giving us counting scores (top four in a given match), and Andrew Martiszus, a freshman, has also shown consistent improvement. His 49 on Monday was his first varsity score that counted," Schleifer said.

The Warriors were rained out Wednesday after seven holes of a conference match at Red Bud.
