Football Story
Wesclin's football Warriors improved to 2-3 on the season with a resounding 48-8 victory over Dupo this past Friday, in Wesclin's homecoming game. Wesclin struck early and often, piling up 26 first quarter points and adding two more touchdowns before halftime. Quarterback Jake Sopiars went in from seven yards out to start things with less than two minutes gone in the game. On Dupo's subsequent punt, Letwon Williams electrified the crowd with a 76-yard touchdown return, then burst through the Tigers' defense for a 75-yard TD run on Wesclin's next possession. Sopiars closed out Wesclin's first-quarter scoring with a 36-yard scamper. Sopiars piled up 153 ground yards on the game and scored three touchdowns for Wesclin, who enjoyed their best offensive outing of the season with 370 yards on the ground. After Sopiars scored again with just under seven minutes left in the second frame, Tony Bechtoldt scored on a 40-yard pass play from Sopiars, one of only two Wesclin passing attempts on the game. Williams carried four times for 77 total yards, and fullback Zach Haselhorst ground out 84 yards on seven carries, and scored Wesclin's final touchdown on a one-yard plunge midway through the third quarter. Bechtoldt gained 56 yards on five rushing attempts. ![]() |

Soccer Story
Wesclin's soccer team posted a 1-1-1 record during the past week, playing Valmeyer to a scoreless tie Thursday, falling to Greenville in overtime Saturday, and dominating Carlyle Monday. Wesclin 0, Valmeyer 0 Despite an 18-4 shot advantage, the Warriors couldn't find the net in a tie that survived two overtime periods. Greenville 3, Wesclin 2 Wesclin lost a double-overtime battle after Greenville was awarded a penalty kick on a questionable call with just over a minute left in the game. Charlie Bair scored for Wesclin on assists from Justin Stern and Steven Curtis, and Nick Mastromatteo netted the Warriors' other goal on a penalty kick. Wesclin 5, Carlyle 0 Tyler Shaw scored twice and three other Wesclin players also chalked up goals in an easy win over Carlyle in which Wesclin outshot the Indians 30 to 4. Shaw scored the icebreaker about ten minutes into the contest, with assists to Charlie Bair and Nick Mastromatteo. Shane Kirkland found the net six minutes later, with assists to Shaw and Mastromatteo. Shaw struck again with just over seven minutes left in the first half, assist to Bair. Luke Pakosta converted a penalty kick two minutes into the second half, and Jimmy Jenkins scored the final Wesclin goal a couple of minutes later on a header assisted by Bair and Shaw. ![]() |

Volleyball Story
Wesclin's volleyball team lost a pair of difficult conference matches on the week's play, losing at home to Cahokia powerhouse Central and falling at Columbia on Thursday. The Lady Warriors are 10-4 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Wesclin 22-19, Central 25-25 Wesclin had opportunities in both games, but came out on the short end of a Central sweep. In the opening game, the Lady Warriors took a 21-16 lead at one point on a tip kill from Alicia Litteken, but Central reeled off six straight points and went on to the win. Kayla Drummond had seven kills to lead Wesclin. Jillian Hausmann had eight assists and Brittany Wallace six. Gretchen Rieger led the team in digs with 12. Wesclin 21-21, Columbia 25-25 Columbia avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of Wesclin with a two-game victory. Gretchen Rieger had eight kills for Wesclin, and Brittany Wallace and Kayla Drummond had four each. Jillian Hausmann led the Lady Warriors with 10 assists, while Brittany Wallace had nine. Hausmann also came up with 19 digs. Kelsey Boeser and Gretchen Rieger also reached double figures in digs with 12 and 10 respectively. ![]() |
