Football Story
Wesclin's football team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat Friday night at Carlyle, marking the third time in as many years the Warriors prevailed over their cross-county rivals in a down-to-the-wire finish. The past two years, Wesclin has beaten Carlyle in overtime. This year, the Warriors got it done on the last play of the game, a 25-yard Ryan Becherer field goal that gave Wesclin a 10-8 victory. The victory was made more improbable due to the momentum switch that led to it. Leading 8-7, Carlyle was on the march when their drive stalled at the Wesclin nine and the Warriors took over on downs with just over five minutes left. Keyed by long runs from quarterback Jake Sopiars and Letwon Williams, and a crucial third-down conversion on a 29-yard Sopiars-to-Tony Bechtoldt completion, Wesclin drove all the way to Carlyle's five yard line before calling on Becherer for the game-winner. Sopiars picked up 148 yards on the ground for the game, and Williams lugged 16 times for 129 rush yards. Wesclin scored on their first possession of the game and dominated much of the first-half action, leading 7-0 at the break, after Sopiars was taken down on the Carlyle three after a long, serpentine run on the final play of the half. Carlyle scored on its first possession of the second half, taking over eight minutes off the clock, and converted the two-point conversion to take the lead. The Indians' final drive chewed up another 5:28, but ended at the Wesclin nine when the Warriors took over on downs. After a 1-3 start, the Warriors rolled over Dupo last week, and the win over Carlyle puts Wesclin at 3-3 and squarely in the playoff hunt. The Warriors have games remaining at Freeburg and home against Central and Paris to close out the season. Six wins will almost guarantee a playoff slot, and five wins makes Wesclin eligible for the postseason. John Beach led Wesclin with eight solo tackles, followed by seven solos from Zach Haselhorst and six each from Skylar Mugele and Ryan Becherer. ![]() |
Soccer Warriors Fall to Lebanon
Wesclin's soccer team twice overcame deficits to tie its match with Lebanon last Thursday, but couldn't overcome a Lebanon penalty kick with seven minutes left that gave a 4-3 victory to the Greyhounds. Lebanon opened the scoring sixteen minutes into the match, but Justin Stern found the goal less than ten minutes later to tie things up before Lebanon took a 2-1 halftime lead on a goal four minutes prior to the break. The Greyhounds extended their lead just over five minutes into the second half, but Brad Reibold and Shane Kirkland put together consecutive scores less than a minute apart and the Warriors had their last tie at 3-3. ![]() |
