Wesclin may have established its identity for the season, as homecoming spoilers. A week after ruining Carlyle's homecoming with a last-second, game-winning field goal, the Warriors dismantled Freeburg on the Midgets' homecoming week.

Wesclin won its third straight game and brightened its playoff hopes with a 21-6 road victory.

The Warriors imposed their will on the ground, rolling up over 300 yards on the ground. Senior halfback Letwon Williams lugged the ball 23 times for 198 yards on the game, and scored a pair of touchdowns. Senior quarterback Jake Sopiars added 79 yards on 13 carries for Wesclin, including a 24-yard touchdown scamper for the Warriors' first score of the game. Sopiars also completed two of three passes on the game, a fifteen-yarder to Tony Bechtoldt and a nineteen-yard gain to Paul Ritzheimer.

Wesclin's defense was also impressive, holding Freeburg scoreless until the waning moments, with the Warriors leading 21-0.

Wesclin led 7-0 at halftime, then tacked on two more scores in the fourth quarter, with Williams getting the bulk of the work. Williams opened the fourth with a 38-yard burst down the sideline for a touchdown, and walked in from a yard out just five minutes later.

    Soccer Story

Wesclin has one more chance to get a conference soccer win, this Thursday at Carlyle, but the Warriors fell short in their quest last week when they tied Freeburg and lost to visiting Central to fall to 0-3-2 in the Cahokia.

    Wesclin 1, Freeburg 1

In what head coach Mark Lockowitz called the Warriors' "best passing game I'd seen all season," Wesclin emerged with a 1-1 tie at Freeburg.

Ryan Vincent made eight saves and Wesclin outshot the Midgets 15-9. Tyler Shaw gave Wesclin a 1-0 lead just over 12 minutes into the game, assists to Justin Stern and Brad Reibold. Freeburg tied it at 34 minutes, and the teams played to a draw through the second half and ten minutes of overtime.

"We controlled the tempo of the game most of the time and we had a lot of unselfish play as far as passing," Lockowitz said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't finish."

    Central 2, Wesclin 1

Wesclin broke out on top and outshot the visiting Cougars 14-7, but Central blooped one in eleven minutes into the second half and scored another with just 40 seconds remaining to wrestle away the victory.

Tyler Shaw scored Wesclin's only goal, 12:30 into the contest.

    Volleyball Story
