Letwon Williams upends a Paris ballcarrier Saturday. Warriors rumble into postseason with win over Paris While seldom seen this season, Wesclin's passing offense proved to be efficient, as the only pass of the day for the Warriors resulted in a 12-yard touchdown from Jake Sopiars to Ryan Becherer. That was enough of the aerial game for the Warriors, who piled up over 300 ground yards on the game, with Sopiars and halfback Letwon Williams both going over the 100-yard mark in a 33-0 Wesclin domination of visiting Paris. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Warriors, and capped a five-game regular season winning streak the pushed Wesclin into the postseason after a 1-3 start to the season. On the defensive side of the ball, the Warriors held Paris to just 140 total yards, and the visitors never really sniffed the end zone, rarely penetrating beyond midfield. The Wesclin defense has played extremely well as the Warriors ripped off wins against Dupo, Carlyle, Freeburg, Central, and Paris to secure their playoff slot. The Warriors would not have made the playoffs with a loss Saturday. The most compelling game in that stretch was at Carlyle, when Wesclin beat the Indians on a last-second Becherer field goal. After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors put up a pair of touchdowns in the second frame, on a two-yard run from Sopiars and Becherer's reception. Williams went in from 11 yards out with 4:31 left in the third quarter, and Sopiars and Williams each scored in the final quarter. Sopiars also picked up his 26th career interception during the game, on the final play of the first half. That ranks the senior defensive back third in career picks in the state of Illinois, and just two behind the state record of 28. The interception was Sopiars' eighth this season. ![]() |

Local road racer third at nationals
Dwight Faitz of Trenton placed third October 13th in the Sports Car Club of America road racing runoffs in Topeka, Kansas, the final event of the year for SCCA which features division winners from around the country. The event is considered the amateur Olympics of road racing in America. Faitz has always been interested in going fast, and he's been racing part-time on the road racing circuit since 1997. Faitz and his uncle, Dennis Fohne, form a two-man part-time team that competes against others with more money, sponsorships, and manpower, which makes the strong finish especially gratifying. "It's hard to compete against some of the bigger teams, but I really have to give a lot of credit to Dennis, because he does a lot of work on the car, which allows me to study data and GPS tracking to give us our best chance," said Faitz. Faitz averaged about 86 miles an hour over the 2.3 mile track and posted the fastest single lap in the field in his 2005 Subaru Legacy, and got a measure of exposure when he was interviewed by Speed Channel, who will telecast a recording of the race on December 5th at 1 p.m. ![]() |
